The Sun is Out! How’s Your Vitamin D?

With the hottest April days upon us, clear blue skies and bright sunshine you can often hear conversation turn to Vitamin D. The sunshine vitamin is a popular subject these days with the reported belief that the majority of people living in the northern hemisphere might be low on this key vitamin.

So what’s all the fuss about?

In recent years a much greater understanding of the function and benefits of Vitamin D have come to light through the interest and research in this area. It’s likely that the list will continue to grow in the coming years as we learn more.
What most people do know about Vitamin D is that it’s a key contributor to our bone health. But did you also know that it can support these areas of health too?

  • Energy levels
  • Immunity
  • Muscle function and contraction
  • Heart and cardiovascular health

And many more!

Where do we get Vitamin D from?

You can get it in your diet in small amounts from oily fish, liver and eggs. But the main source is the sun’s UVB rays that prompt a physiological chemical reaction following hitting the skin.

Just remember to be safe with your sun exposure!

Should I supplement?

My advice is always to get your levels tested before supplementing. It’s a simple blood test which your GP may agree to do for you, but you can also get tested relatively cheaply and quickly on the private market. Don’t hesitate to get in touch if you want to know more about this.
